Get Full Control of Your Forklifts with a Forklift Lockout Device
There’s been a lot of interest from facility managers and plant managers for forklift lockout devices or also called forklift access control. In recent discussions, customers expressed the increase of new warehouse hires, and the increase demand placed on forklift operators as reasons for a forklift lockout device.
The Reason for a Forklift Lockout Device
The more people within the facility, the greater the chance an individual will come up with the ‘unique’ idea to try to drive a forklift truck. It certainly looks like fun, and frankly how hard can it be? Right? New employees are always curious, and these are great qualities to have. However, acting upon their curiosity can lead them to getting injured or causing severe damage to the forklift and the facility. In addition, forklift operators have experienced an increase in workload. As a result, they are in a hurry. When forklift operators begin their shift, they enter the facility and get started. If there is a forklift available and close by, their first instinct is to hop into the forklift and begin the first day’s order. Although their enthusiasm is appreciated, the behavior increases the risk of missed forklift inspections and utilizing a forklift that was not assigned to them. Not a Stand-Alone Device
The last thing you need is another device to manage. So instead, SIERA.AI includes the forklift lockout device directly with our S2 and S3 safety solutions. Here, everything is in one location and can be easily tracked in the web-based Dashboard.
In either safety solution, it’s vital for the forklift operator to conduct a forklift inspection in order to maintain OSHA compliance. When ready to begin their shift, the forklift operator enters the forklift and needs to either enter a PIN number or scan their badge. If either of these things do not occur, the forklift will not move.
Let’s say the forklift operator scans their badge. Next, the digital forklift inspection checklist comes up. If the forklift operator tries to continue without completing the inspection, the safety system will know and the forklift operator will not proceed with their shift. If the forklift failed a forklift inspection, the forklift operator will be given a warning letting them know they have 30 seconds (or whatever you set it at) to safely park the lift truck and the forklift will disable itself.
Only when the forklift inspection checklist is fully complete will the safety system allow access to the forklift. In addition, the forklift operator will now be associated with the forklift they are signed into, so in the event something happens during the shift, electronic documentation will help you know who was on a particular shift and forklift.
