The Introduction of AI to Forklift Safety for Inspections
Industrial Health & Safety Network featured an article on Dr. David Michaels, a former OSHA chief, discussed how closing OSHA offices will increase worker injuries, illnesses and even deaths. Just late last year, we reported that OSHA had expanded offices, and went through a reorganization of their regions. Now, it seems all of that was for nothing as offices will be closing in certain areas around the country. As a result, the article reports that inspections will decrease. What if OSHA worked to advance inspections with the use of technology?
Their statistics show that there is CSHO for ever 81k workers. That’s a pretty big figure. It stated that it would take 186 years to visit every workplace just once.
The Introduction of AI to Forklift Safety for Inspections
The OSHA inspection for forklift safety is minimal. It asks companies to fill out an inspection form to ensure the health of the forklift, which in turns makes it safer for the operator to drive. But the advancement of forklifts has clearly surpassed the paper based method. That’s where digital comes in, mostly.
Turning the paper based forklift safety inspections into digital is a great first step as it has the capability of capturing the answers to the questions, which is very helpful in managing the health of the forklift. However, the challenge that remains is the same behaviors prevail. The way the forklift operators filled out the paper version will be no different than the digital. If they were ‘pencil whipping’ the paper inspection, they can do the same ‘digital whipping’. What can be done to combat this issue?
Randomization and Scheduled Change
Our AI forklift safety system has a special feature that allows you to turn on the randomization of the questions in each section of the digital forklift inspection. When the toggle is turned on for each of the sections, that will automatically randomize the questions so the forklift operator will not know which question will show up first. This encourages the operator to read the question before answering. If the question is answered quickly and not read, then there is a high probability the forklift inspection will fail. If it does, a notification instantaneously goes out to all those that need to know this information.
As all humans are good at figuring out patterns, we encourage one extra step, which is to change one question on a quarterly basis. The one question will again keep the operators on their toes so they don’t fail the inspection. The good data will help maintenance to keep the forklift fleet healthy and last more than just the five years expected.
Reports are Ready to Go
All of the data is collected in the Dashboard. This data can help with comparisons by worksite, drill down to learn more about a particular lift truck or compare over time how the lift truck changed. These are just some of the ways you can conduct some analysis and make fact based decisions on the health of the forklift or the entire fleet. Our goal is to help extend the life of the forklift, which in turn gives you more bang for the investment.
