Are Technologies in Forklift Safety Advanced Enough? What About AI? Part 2
Technologies in forklift safety have continued to advance. We discussed a couple days ago about collision avoidance and the benefits of sensors, especially intelligent sensors by SIERA.AI. We’re going to add onto the discussion by talking about AI or artificial intelligence as a key ingredient in technologies in forklift safety. Let’s get started.
Artificial Intelligence
First, let’s define artificial intelligence. AI is the science of enabling machines to think like a human. Now, they cannot think like a human, but if programmed properly, they can run through large amounts of data and process it through unlike us, your fellow human. We want the AI technology to recognize patterns and make a decision just like we as humans would. But remember, they are only as smart as we program them to be.
Artificial Intelligence in Forklift Safety
Technologies in forklift safety does include AI or artificial intelligence. This is a great use of it as its task is to be on constant watch for humans and objects, then notify the operator. That’s is the entire job of AI. Now, we can say it can go a step further with speed control and slowing down the vehicle, but let’s first just understand the operation of AI.
AI Sensors are Fast
The benefit of the camera or sensor with AI technology is this: it allows the sensor to do its job of scanning fast. Ours scans every 60ms. That’s fast, much faster than the human eye. As the operator is moving the forklift, the AI sensor just does the one job of scanning fast. The information coming into the sensor is analyzed by the AI technology to determine if the human or object is within the safe distance from the forklift. If the answer (that we taught it) is no, then it determines if it is a human or an object.
Human can come in various shapes and forms, but has been taught what to know about a human. Same goes true for an object. The object can be a box, a racking system, wall or a broom. Doesn’t matter, it knows. Based on its quick analysis, it then notifies the operator that a person or object is within the dangerous zone of the forklift. It will choose if it should flash a picture of a human or a picture of a box that represents an object. Once it decides, it will also signal for the audio alarm to sound as well. The combination of the two will work in unison for the operator to take action.
If the operator chooses to ignore the audio and visual warnings, the telemetry Dashboard will keep track of such actions as this can / will turn into a forklift collision.
Telemetry Dashboard
Not enough is ever said about this great tool. It gives you what you need to know right at your fingertips. When you want to know about your assets, analyze trends, predict how to care for your assets, for example, this is where you go. Find out:
- Total Incidents
- Low, Medium and High Impacts
- Near Misses
- Pass / Fail for Inspections
- Unauthorized Access and more.
Because of the information collected due to the AI technology, you’ll be able to use the data to make proactive decisions. That’s because you’ll be able to know what is going on versus figuring out what happened. It has been shared that by the time the manager gets to the scene of the incident, alterations to the scene have been made. The story has been altered. But because of the data collected, and the immediate notifications, you can get to the scene fast and make your determination.
Let’s discuss this further.
