Speed Limiters on Forklifts?
In a recent article in Safety + Health magazine, they discussed passing a house bill that would block efforts to require speed limiters on trucks and buses on the road. There were various reasons for it not be pass, especially safety. If the trucks are going slower than the flow of traffic, then there is a risk of an accident no different than if there wasn’t one. Even though street drivers to avoid trucks because they already go slower, this can create an issue. Many industry groups support this legislation. But what about forklifts? Should there be speed limiters on forklifts?
Speed Limiters on Forklifts
Speed limiters on forklifts control the speed of a forklift consistently across the board where they will never go over a certain speed limit, say 8 or 10 miles per hour, or a speed limiter that reduces the speed when coming to the end of an aisleway. Either way, these can be done today. Has it helped reduce accidents? Has it reduced productivity due to the slowdown process?
Slowing the Forklift Down
Slowing the forklift down when the forklift doesn’t go much beyond ten miles per hour is a personal preference and may be applicable in some situations. However, when the forklift is going even slower, productivity does get affected. Do take the time to measure how many orders go unfulfilled, or put aways are left behind and so forth. If the number is affected and revenue is lost, clearly, you need another solution. However, if you want to empower and not punish, then another course of action can be taken to ensure productivity gains and not drops due to speed limiters on forklifts.
Forklift Safety System with AI Technology
If you want to empower your forklift drivers to be safe while driving so they can focus on the work at hand, a forklift safety system with AI technology can help accomplish the goal. While the forklift driver is working the forks or other attachments, the forklift safety system is keeping watch for people or objects that come within a predefined distance. The pedestrian and object detection with our AI, intelligent camera ensures that safety is implemented all of the time so the driver can work. If we don’t allow truck drivers to do anything else while driving, why do we expect it of forklift drivers?
Collection of Data
As the forklift goes about its route, then the AI forklift safety system is constantly collecting data for analysis. The data is stored in an online, highly protected Dashboard and presented in an easy to read, graphics based way. This way you can get the data you need and make fact based decisions that can help your company be as productive and safe as possible.
