What Can I Track with a Digital Forklift Inspection Checklist?
More and more forklift safety professionals are finding that moving to digital forklift inspection checklists are far more effective than paper-based forklift inspections. The time it takes to complete the forklift inspection, either way, remains the same or similar, but that’s not the reason to make the switch. We have spoken before about randomizing the questions, and that is a great benefit. But the number one reason to move to the digital forklift inspection checklist is for the collection of data and reporting. But as we listen to our customers, they asked, can you record time on a digital checklist? Meaning can we report how long it takes for a forklift driver to answer each question individually and collectively.
Record Time on a Digital Checklist
A forklift safety system does a lot of automation and collection of data for the safety professional. We are not going to visit all of the features and benefits it currently does, we are going to discuss a new feature that our customers asked for and we delivered on: Record Time on a Digital Checklist.
What is it About?
Record time on a digital checklist is about the time it takes to complete the checklist by each of the forklift operators on the forklift asset they are assigned. Now, this doesn’t mean faster is better, or the longer it takes to answer, the better.
Some questions should be a shorter time to answer, and some should take longer, especially if the forklift needs to be running or if you randomize the questions. If you want to be sure that they are reading the questions, then you may need to give it an extra second or two to read and answer accurately. The time it takes should give you an indication if there is an issue with the forklift. Let’s take a look at this example.
In the sample ‘Inspection Details’, you already know the inspection passed. If you look at this single inspection, you’ll notice it took 1 min 5 seconds for the entire inspection to be done. Is that good for your forklift? If not, then take a look at the details in each section. Was it done too quickly? The time it takes can give you insights into the thought process of the operator and the condition of the forklift. Over time as you collect data, it will be easy to detect if an operator isn’t answering the questions properly, or if there is an actual issues developing with the asset.
Maintenance Insights
Maintenance can appreciate the details of the time as well. If a particular area takes well above the time necessary to inspect, the maintenance manager can inquire. Was the driver checking on something further? Was the forklift asset experiencing an issue? Was it a false alarm? The maintenance manager can identify an issue faster avoiding downtime and costly repairs for a particular asset.
Questions Can Change
Questions can be changed over time to reflect a new lift truck, new operator or a change in the environment. These changes will be evident at first, alerting safety professionals to the outcomes and any adjustments that need to be made.
