Does a PIT Safety System Replace Other Pedestrian Alerts
PIT safety system is gradually making its way into facilities across the U.S. and slowly, around the world. It is advanced technologies such as AI and machine learning being used for a positive purpose. It is a way for companies to maintain compliance, a chance for people working next to dangerous machines to be safe and secure and a way to give intelligence to hard working machines that are the heavy lifters within the facility. It is the PIT safety system that has become the extra set of eyes that works better than even our own.
What is a PIT Safety System?
PIT is Powered Industrial Truck, and each truck needs a PIT safety system to ensure damage isn’t done to the truck, the facility, other equipment or product. And certainly, we all know that PIT safety system is also there to protect the operator and people working around the PIT or powered industrial truck. What are some of the ways it can help with safety?
It Never Blinks
Part of the PIT safety system is an AI based camera. It constantly ‘look’s or scans every 60ms in search of a person or object within its path. These eyes never blink…never stop looking…always on the look out. Even if you had a second person on the forklift watching when the forklift operator is operating the vehicle, it still wouldn’t work as well as the AI based camera. Why?
Is it a Person or an Object?
The AI technology has learned the difference between a person or an object. As the camera scans, and finds something within the path, it takes in the information and begins to determine what it is. Is it a person or is it an object? Based on its learning, it then will inform the driver with both an audio and visual alert as to what it found. If it determines it is a person, it will give a symbol of a human. If it determines it is an object, it will give the symbol of a box. The forklift driver is now knowledgeable and can take the appropriate action based on the training received.
What if There is Both?
What happens when the forklift driver is approaching a few boxes left in the aisle. The operator may think it’s a great idea to use the forklift to move the boxes and put them away where they belong. And that would be the right thing to do. But what if there’s a person behind those boxes? What if the person is bending down and all that you see is their elbow, or part of their back? What if they are on all fours? And all that shows is a foot? That person will be in immediate danger of getting hurt or probably killed with the forks.
The PIT safety system can identify part of the human body. Even if the foot has a shoe on, or a hard hat or an elbow pad. If it’s a human, the PIT system will first identify and inform the forklift operator that a human is behind the boxes. It will scan and show in the screen the symbol of a human along with the audio alerts. Now the forklift operator will look behind the boxes and work with the individual on what to do next with the product left in the aisles. A crisis has been averted.
