Does Forklift Safety Technology Really Reduce Accidents and Injuries?
Pedestrian detection technology is used within various forklift safety systems in order to reduce the amount of forklift encounters with pedestrians or workers within the facility. There are a few different technologies to choose from, but what is best for your environment? We’ll take a look at a few of the pedestrian detection technology systems offered specifically for the forklift or lift truck industry. Let’s get started.
What is Pedestrian Detection Technology on a Lift Truck
Pedestrian detection technology on a forklift allows the forklift operator to be notified if a human being is within the vicinity of the lift truck. These notifications can include alarms and visual alerts to ensure getting the attention of the forklift operator. This is used in order to reduce the number of close encounters as well as injuries and fatalities forklift operators have with pedestrians using the same space. What are some of the pedestrian detection technology out in the market today?
RFID Tags
This pedestrian detection technology uses RFID tagging. Meaning the individual coming into the facility must put on an RFID tag in order to be identified. This is usually on a lanyard with a tag that is worn on each pedestrian. Equipment is installed throughout the facility in order to detect the tag and identify their presence.
Tape
This low tech solution reads the tape found in or on safety equipment. This can be used to provide safety within the facility, however, what if the safety equipment is not worn, put to the side, covered, for instance, when carrying a box or a multitude of other ways the tape would not be shown. This poses a high risk to the pedestrians in the facility.
AI Machine Learning Technology
This high tech solution has the ability to learn. It can detect either the human or the object itself and identify the difference between the two. However, SIERA.AI has taken its AI solution one step further with partial human detection. The advances in this technology allows you to:
- Set your own distance for pedestrian and object detection
- Once the detection is triggered, you will get a picture of either a human symbol or a box symbol identifying that a human or object is nearby. This will let the operator know to change its course and/or slow down.
- Along with the visual alarm, it also features an audio alarm that the operator will be able ‘hear’. Now due to numerous noises in the facility, the combination of the two will get the attention of the forklift driver.
What is partial detection? Partial detection is when the human is partially hidden by an object. The SIERA.AI forklift safety system will identify if the elbow, foot, head, arm, whatever part of the human is being shown. If it does detect a partial human, then it will notify the operator that a HUMAN is present…not the object first.
