Can an Outdoor Forklift Safety System Work as Good as an Indoor System?
Outdoor forklift safety systems are an important part of the material handling industry. However, outdoor forklifts require different needs than indoor forklifts. We’ll get to how to protect the asset with an outdoor forklift safety system in a minute.
To begin, outdoor forklifts need to make their way through rugged terrains and extreme weather conditions in order to keep the facility operations running consistently. The outdoor terrains need to deal with uneven ground and a mix of concrete with potholes, gravel roads, and maybe even some dirt. Not to mention the weather conditions based on where you’re at. If you are in areas that have four very different seasons like the Midwest, you can count on extreme temperatures year-round. Other areas can be much hotter like Arizona or colder as Canada experiences.
By ignoring safety precautions for these outdoor forklifts can lead to accidents, injuries and downtime which can erase a company bottom line profits.
Now that we’ve identified the problem, let’s see what an outdoor forklift safety system can do.
Outdoor Forklift Safety System
An Outdoor forklift safety system has all of the same features as an indoor safety system except it can handle the weather conditions (heat, cold, rain). However, technologies can prove to be ‘iffy’ with working outdoors as they rely on wearables or repeaters to help with safety. However, using AI-based technology, such as SIERA.AI’s forklift safety system, allows the forklift to drive anywhere inside or even outside and maintain monitoring and tracking.
Outdoor Units
Due to the weather elements, your forklift will need an outdoor weather casing which can handle the elements. However, does anything else change on the SIERA.AI system? No. Everything else stays the same on the outdoor forklift safety system. It is still monitoring for pedestrians and objects, and can even learn the rough terrain to ensure the elimination of false positives. That’s because there’s just as many potholes on the outside as it is sometimes on the inside!
WIFI or Cellular
Some facilities have WIFI or cellular in some or all of the facility. The reach of WIFI or cellular can also go to the outdoors, but doesn’t cover the entire yard. Can an AI-based proximity detection system continue to work? The answer is yes. It will continue to read, monitor and track all activity as if it was indoors. Once the forklift reaches WIFI or cellular again, that collected data is immediately uploaded and stored in the telemetry Dashboard.
Telemetry Dashboard
All of the information captured indoors or with the outdoor forklift safety system is captured in real-time in the telemetry Dashboard. The Dashboard is graphics based. This means you can view your critical stats quickly and in an easy to read way. These stats can include near misses, pass / fail forklift inspections, tracking of low, medium and high impacts by pedestrian and separately by object. Now, to take that information more in depth, you can click on which information you want to know more about and quickly get access to the data without hiring or spending hours on the telemetry Dashboard.
