A Little Truth Can Go a Long Way in Getting the MHE Checklist Completed
Is it possible to convince operators that drive material handling equipment such as forklift, reach trucks and pallet jacks to willingly fill out the MHE checklist? It’s a battle, no doubt. But the MHE checklist is critical to not only ensuring the equipment is working at peak performance, but it also keeps operators and workers safe from harm. Sure, after operating a lift truck for years one would think they know everything about it. However, as equipment ages, things change with the machinery. Or what if new equipment is purchased? Does it act just like the old equipment? Of course not. There’s improvements and new features that must be learned and that will take a bit of time. How can we convince operators that completing an MHE checklist is showing a level of care from the company to the operator and that level of care needs to go from the operator to the workers? Here are a few ideas.
What is an MHE Checklist?
First, lets discuss what an MHE checklist is. An MHE checklist is a series of chosen questions that are presented to the operator in order check the health and effectiveness of key areas within the material handling equipment. The results of the answers can be analyzed in order to schedule regular maintenance, repairs or quickly take care of a budding problem. These steps are used to ensure the safety of the operator and the effectiveness of the equipment from the gradual wear and tear that it experiences each day.
Forklift Safety System
Bottom line, a forklift safety system ensures that those who choose to cut corners, ignore the warnings, late to starting their shift and other excuses, will be known. The forklift safety system will simply not start if the electronic MHE checklist is not completed or if the electronic MHE checklist fails its inspection. Sometimes that’s what it takes to ensure it is done 100% of the time.
But what about those professional pencil whippers? Simply use the toggle to switch on ‘random’. This randomizes the questions in each section of the MHE checklist! Now that challenging operators will have to read.
Think of the MHE Checklist as a To Do List
We all make a list of things that we need to do. We make lists when we go to the grocery store or the hardware store. And we look at it, and use it in order to ensure completion of the list. An MHE checklist is the same thing. We need to look at it and answer the questions to ensure completion. Sometimes it’s as simple as that.
What Would Your Mom Say?
If your mom knew that you were risking your life and the life of others for simply not completing the MHE checklist, what would mom say? Nothing too pleasant, I’m sure. So, if you hear mom’s voice in your head that says, ‘finish that MHE checklist. It only takes a minute.’ You better do it.
What Would Your Significant Other Say?
Again, this is an unpleasant situation. Your significant other does not want the operator hurt or someone else either! That person would say, ‘why are you taking such risks?’ ‘We need you!’ ‘Your family needs you!’. We rely on you each day to, and you’re taking risks like this? Why?
Sometimes it’s the little things that help convince the touch one’s that the 2 minutes before your shift can make the difference between going home and never going home again.
