Managing the Limitations of AI
It seems that every article that discusses AI technologies just talks about the benefits and what it can do for you. Few discuss how managing the limitations of AI can be challenging. Conducting a bit of research, we’ve compiled a list of challenges using AI and they include: Poor data quality, employees concerned about the long term viability of their jobs, the technology is trying to do too much, keeping the right ‘people’ in the loop, is the data understandable and usable. Are these concerns valid for an AI based forklift safety system such as SIERA AI? Let’s take a closer look.
Poor Data Quality
We couldn’t agree more. Quality of data is critical as it drives decision making. But collecting data needs to be strategic and thoughtful, not just collecting data just so you have as much as possible. The way SIERA AI approached data quality was directly to our customers. They drive our telemetry Dashboard. They are the ones who use it, so they are the ones that tell us what they want in the system. That’s why many of our users are ‘super users’, because they use all of the features in our Dashboard.
Employees Concerned About the Long-Term Viability of their Jobs
The AI forklift safety system has been developed and created for the forklift operator and workers in mind. It is meant to be the extra set of ‘eyes’ to protect the driver and those that work around the forklift. In addition, its job is to also watch out for objects so it doesn’t hit racks, equipment or the door.. anywhere within the facility. It works with the forklift operator so the operator can do his/her job while it constantly monitors every 60ms keeping everyone and everything at a safe distance from the forklift. It will give an audio and visual alert to the driver so the driver knows what just came into the danger zone, a person or an object so the operator knows what to look for. Managing the limitations of AI? So far not here.
The Technology is Trying to Do Too Much
That can be true of other solutions, but not with the AI forklift safety system. It’s doing exactly what it was designed and built to do: protect people and objects from coming in contact with the forklift. Capture the data, analyze it, and make adjustments along the way to reduce risk and maintain it in the future.
Keeping the Right People in the Loop
Absolutely right, but when necessary. For our forklift safety system, there is an automatic notification for impacts. But you choose if you want them for low, medium or high impacts. Based on your selection, you’ll only get those notifications. For the online Dashboard, that’s up to you who you want to gain access to the software. There are levels of security, so only those that need the information will get it.
Is the Data Usable?
Absolutely. As we stated in the Poor Data Quality section, the data collected is what our customers want. The data as a stand alone or used in conjunction with reports is where the system shines. For instance, if you want to know where the impacts are occurring, use a combination of the GPS and heat map to show where the impacts are occurring. Since all of the data is collected in real-time, you can watch the data to up or down once you made the change to the area.
