Top 3 Forklift Safety Technology Tips to Minimize Risk in Your Operation
Technology, as in forklift safety technology can play a big part in reducing and minimizing risk. Not only does forklift safety technology keep employees, visitors and other workers safe, it can also minimize the damage done by equipment to other equipment as well as the facility itself. Let’s take a look at some of the aspects of what makes forklift safety technology a better, more improved way of maintaining operational excellence.
1. Forklift Proximity Detection
Forklift proximity detection is one of the most critical aspects in forklift safety technology. As the AI machine learning technology scans to the distance that you, the manager, set, the AI technology is searching for workers and objects both at the same time. When one comes within the defined distance, a warning to the forklift operator occurs with an audio and visual warning. The visual warning is displayed as a symbol of either a human or a box, letting the operator know what is nearby. Once the visual and audio is displayed to the forklift operator, the operator can now take action to maintain a safe distance between the forklift and the object and/or human.
2. Seat Belt Operations
Another aspect of forklift safety technology is the use of seat belts. We all know that seat belts are mandatory, however, its not always used. With technology, the forklift will not start or move forward until the seat belt is worn and in use by the operator. This is to ensure the safety of the operator so the operator doesn’t try to move out of a moving forklift, try to jump out if the forklift tips or try to reach with their hands in areas that can cause harm.
Forklift Access Control
This is an important part of forklift safety technology as this is what keeps unauthorized people from accessing a lift truck. For instance:
• When logging into the forklift safety system, the operator must first scan the QR code on the badge in order to ensure you are authorized to be on the forklift. If not, then the operator will not gain access.
• If the operator is not up to date on their forklift certification, then again, the individual will not gain access to the forklift, and will not start.
• Because the forklift inspection checklist is digital, the system will automatically track positive and negative answers. If the answer comes out where it says there is an issue with the forklift, then again, the forklift will not start.
• If the forklift has an impact above the pre-defined G-Force setting, the forklift will give the operator a warning of (ex: 20, 30 seconds) to pull over to the side as the damage is too great to continue. The forklift safety system will automatically shut down.
