Forklift Proximity Sensor
Pedestrian, facility, racking, and product safety are a big challenge…new and innovative AI forklift proximity sensors may be a potential solution.
If you’ve been fortunate to avoid having a high-risk forklift accident, you know it can be a matter of time. However, for those that have experienced a pedestrian or employee death, long-term injury, or thousands of dollars spent on repairs, lift truck incidences can be very costly.
On the bright side, it is not impossible to minimize the losses and become proactive with lift truck safety. Every warehouse, manufacturing plant, and distribution center can benefit from the latest innovations in forklift proximity sensors as a result.
Before we go further, we want to take a quick moment to share our FREE 5-Step Forklift Safety Guide. These guide has been developed over 3+ years working with customers like Geodis, and Tyson Foods who have prevented 11,000+ impacts working with us.

What is a Forklift Proximity Sensor?
A forklift proximity sensor is a smart device installed on a lift truck to warn an operator when the vehicle is in close proximity to an object to prevent potential accidents. A proximity sensor is typically a laser, ultrasound, or vision-based device that may be programmed to monitor and alert based on certain parameters like distance and speed.
5 Ways Forklift Proximity Sensors Can Improve Workplace Safety
Forklift Proximity Warning
Proximity warning can be installed on any type of lift truck: order picker, stock chaser, narrow aisle more. Proximity warning ‘sees’ what the driver cannot. If the driver is busy looking forward…what’s going on around the forklift that can’t be seen? That’s where proximity warning comes in. The intelligent technology detects a problem, and immediately sounds an audio and visual alarm so action can be taken
Forklift Impact Monitoring
Impact monitoring again, can be installed on any lift truck. The smart solution monitors and tracks the various impacts and is real-time recorded on the cloud-based Dashboard. What can you do with this information? Look for patterns. Is it happening with all drivers or just this one? Is there a difficult to travel area in the facility? Or do you need to provide additional coaching or training?
Forklift Near Miss Tracking
Near Miss Tracking technology is a new way to monitor unsafe driving behavior without waiting for an accident to happen. AI sensors can measure if a lift truck is moving faster than a designated safe speed or maneuvering dangerously close to an object, e.g., a pedestrian or pallet rack. The AI can then record such near misses and help supervisors intervene and address dangerous behaviors before accidents happen
Automatic Slow to a Safe Stop
Automatic Slow to a Safe Stop is a new innovation, for electric forklifts. The Slow to a Safe Stop is where the machine vision & AI technologies detect an obstruction such as pedestrian, racking system, another vehicle or your customer’s product, and as the obstruction comes closer to the forklift, the forklift overrides the driver, slows down the forklift and brings it to complete stop.
Now in the event a product falls off of a shelf and lands close to the forklift, the technology’s reaction time is instantaneous. It will slow and bring the electric forklift to a complete stop. The reaction time of a person or driver is too slow for these instances. This technology developed by SIERA.AI is the ultimate in forklift accident prevention.
Track & Report Forklift Safety
AI forklift proximity sensors can Track & Report the findings for metrics and analytics. We all know or at least suspect what’s going on in the plant or facility. Getting the data to put a highly effective plan in place is crucial. All of the technology gathering the critical data automatically gets recorded and reported real-time on the Dashboard. Valuable recorded data include ‘number of incidents prevented’, ‘quantity of overrides’, ‘average speed’, ‘level of risk’ and lots more.
How can you adopt forklift proximity sensor technology in your operations?
A single forklift injury costs $188,000 in direct and indirect costs. At SIERA.AI we have helped prevent over 11,000 accidents while working with customers like Geodis and Tyson Foods. The SIERA.AI Safety System S3 is the perfect solution to monitor proximity and alert forklift operators PRIOR to making an impact.
