Beyond the Forklift Inspection
What do forklift inspection and facility inspection have in common? Because the answer is ‘a lot’, we’ll only focus on a few key areas of the forklift inspection and facility inspection. To begin, every manufacturing, warehouse and distribution center needs to complete some basic facility inspection reports. Based on their use, some reports only need to be done monthly. However, when it comes to mobile units within the facility, the game changes in frequency. Let’s take a look.
What is a Forklift Inspection and Facility Inspection?
Both a forklift inspection and facility inspection are a list of questions with answers that need to be thoroughly and accurately completed during an interval or period of time in order to ensure safety and proper working order of various equipment and the facility itself. To perform the forklift inspection and facility inspection requires an understanding of what is at stake for the safety and reliability of the workers that perform tasks side-by-side, near or directly on the equipment.
What Areas in the Facility are to be Inspected?
Regardless of the type of facility you operate, there are areas where OSHA requires regular inspection and reporting.
- Building: Report on the condition of the floors, walls, pedestrian walkways and exists
- Electricity: This includes reports on lighting, switches, fuses and any other electrical additions such as extension cords
- Sanitation Program: Reports can include cleaning and spills processes and waste disposal methods
- First Aid: Reports on items in the first aid station, including expiration dates and condition of supplies
- Evacuation Plan: Report on the plan, any changes and worker knowledge of the procedure
- Heating & Ventilation: Report on condition of the units, level of humidity, natural and artificial ventilation and exhaust
What About Forklift Inspections or Mobile Equipment?
Anything mobile or moving needs to be inspected, this includes machinery. Here’s the OSHA list by topic. Mobile equipment including cranes, scrubbers, sweepers, forklift, golf carts, scissor lifts, and more. However, because of the frequency of use, the inspections need to be done on a more regular basis. This can include daily or even prior to each shift.
Regardless if it is a facility inspection or a mobile inspection, OSHA requires the inspection to be completed and the reports to be accessible and current.
Paper-based Challenge
We all understand the importance of OSHA compliance, but we don’t understand the mounds of paper it creates and the time it takes to organize and maintain the mounds of paper. In addition, there’s the challenge of pencil whipping. Everyone who completes the forms know all of the questions and in what order. Are you getting the most accurate data? Yes, you hope so, but you don’t know for sure. If and when a problem arises during the forklift inspection and facility inspection can you turn to the paper-based reports for clarity and clues to the issue?
