Know Who’s Operating the Forklift with Forklift Access Control
Forklift access control is a constant problem with fleet managers and safety managers alike. A single forklift is not used by only one person, it’s commonly used by various workers in the facility from one or more shifts. One thing we know for certain. Not everyone in the facility should be operating a forklift truck.
What is Forklift Access Control?
Forklift access control is the ability to electronically control authorized and non-authorized workers, pedestrians or others that attempt to operate an industrial vehicle. Forklift access control is a way to restrict access to individuals who are untrained to operate an industrial vehicle.
Let’s take a look at forklift access control from two different perspectives: the driver and the manager.
The Forklift Operator
The forklift driver comes to work and wants to begin his day. In order for the driver to gain access to the forklift, he/she will need to either scan their badge or enter a unique PIN number into the system. Now, SIERA.AI takes it a step…or two further.
As soon as the forklift operator logs into the system, the operator is immediately taken to the forklift inspection digital checklist. The forklift will not allow work to begin without the inspection being done. And some have tried.
A company had shared how their forklift driver was notorious for skipping forklift inspections. Every excuse was given, and this individual had some very creative ones. This is what happened when the S2 Digital Inspection with Impact Detection was installed.
• The operator scanned his badge. (no problem)
• Next, he answered 2 questions and decided to leave the rest of the inspection questions. The system recorded the incomplete forklift inspection. As you already know, you need this for OSHA compliance.
• As the operator began to drive the forklift, the individual received a warning that he/she has 30 seconds to pull over as the forklift will automatically disable itself.
It took only one or two more tries before the forklift operator gave up. That’s what the forklift operator will experience with SIERA.AI’s forklift access control.
The Fleet Manager / Safety Manager
The fleet and safety manager will appreciate what the forklift access control system will provide. To begin, you have control over when you want to be notified…and who can get notifications. For instance, if you want to know if someone tried to get access and failed, you or someone else you assign can get the notification. If a forklift inspection failed, you can also get a notification. If the forklift driver decided to skip a bunch of questions, you can also get a notification. You know what’s important to you and others in your organization, notifications can be set up by alert and who is to get the alerts.
Stop the Forklift from the Dashboard
Here’s another situation. A forklift driver has gotten onto a forklift, and your maintenance manager informs you that there’s a problem with the forklift. Depending on the safety risk of the forklift and driver, you can go into the Dashboard and stop the forklift from running. This will help to ensure the safety of the forklift driver and others around in the event the forklift breaks down or moves incorrectly with a moving load.
