Can There Be Too Many Checklists?
Equipment checklists are just one part of the entire safety checklists used and implemented by EHS professionals. Checklists are used for everything from hazardous waste materials to everyday inspections including all types of equipment. However, if checklists or even equipment checklists are not used, do voids remain in their place? What does that mean for your safety program?
What are Safety Checklists?
Safety checklists such as equipment checklists are a tool or guideline for workers to systematically go through the risks involved in order to be sure the safe handling and working order of the hazard or equipment that the worker is in direct contact with. OSHA has some guideline materials on their website in order to help prevent injuries at the workplace.
Customize Your Safety Checklists
No safety checklist, including equipment checklists should be a one size fits all. Each checklist needs to be customized to be effective. Otherwise, is it really contributing to the safety of your facility? Safety checklists and equipment checklists are to be specific to the equipment model or you can easily overlook potential hazards with handing the equipment. Your equipment checklist needs to be easy to use, and presented in a way that is easy for everyone to understand. That’s why a digital safety checklist such as the S2 Inspection Checklist with Impact Detection for equipment is essential. Because after completing your valuable questions to ensure safety, that data is collected for further analysis. Helps make things better and safer.
Users are What Make Safety Checklists Valuable
We all know how forklift operators can quickly pencilwhip equipment checklists. Two seconds, and we’re done! However, capturing the accurate information is vital to knowing where the equipment is in the maturation cycle, does it need repair, or maintenance? Knowing these answers can make the difference with equipment downtime and productivity. In the S2 forklift safety system, the opportunity to select ‘randomize questions’ is a valuable feature to have as it encourages the operator to read the question. If not, and the forklift fails, a notification of failure is sent to management and the forklift is not going to go anywhere.
Adapt the Equipment Checklists
Whether it be equipment checklists or other safety checklists, be sure to review the contents periodically. Figure out if the questions still apply to the situation or equipment being used. Do they need to be edited, changed or removed all together. With a paper-based system, that process can be more complex. With a digital equipment checklist as on a forklift safety system, it takes seconds to change. All you need to do is sign in to the telemetry Dashboard, pick the equipment checklists you need to make a change to, choose the question(s) and make the change. It took me longer to write it than it would for you to get to that section in the telemetry Dashboard to make the change.
Just Remember, when used effectively, equipment checklists and other safety checklists can be a valuable tool to your safety program. But remember to customize and maintain your checklists to ensure you get the most from your safety plan.
