Bureau of Labor Statistics Watches for the New Rising Star of Fatalities
The Bureau of Labor Statistics confirmed in September 2024 at the NSC Show that 73 fatalities were reported in 2022. Now that statistics are only released in two year increments, knowing if PIT truck related issues are getting better or worse won’t be known. Why could this be an issue? There are two reasons for the concern. Let’s take a look to find out.
Other Cited Standards
One of the reasons this is critical is that in the Safety + Health magazine article on the ‘Top 10 list of most frequently cited standards’, in the very last paragraph, the speaker brought out a very concerning increase in number of fatalities at work. Overdoses. According to the speaker, he stated that there is a rise in number of overdoses and they will be watching if the number continues to increase. If so, then countermeasures will be released. They’ll watch it after 525 deaths have been reported in 2022? That is incredibly disturbing. So are some of the other fatalities which include workplace violence at 865 deaths and transportation incidents at 2,066 all in 2022. Minus transportation, that 1,390 deaths. It makes you wonder if any of the 73 forklift fatalities were affected by overdoses or workplace violence.
The Role of a Forklift Safety System
Companies need to prepare for the future for more potential accidents to occur. If people are using substances while at work, this is a huge issue. Not to mention workplace violence. Could the forklift be used as a weapon? A company cannot afford having these issues happen on their watch.
Forklift Access Control
This is a critical aspect of forklift safety. If a person tries to get on a forklift and they are not authorized to be on it, then the forklift will not start. If an angry forklift operator tries to hop on a forklift that they are not certified for, the forklift will not start. Bottomline, the forklift cannot be used as a weapon. If the forklift driver tries to use the forklift in an unfortunate way, there’s no escaping who is to blame. They are logged in, and if an impact occurs, the forklift safety system has a option that you can use to turn on the ‘picture’ feature. Meaning that in the instance the impact occurs, it will take a picture of the DRIVER. Now you know who it was, where they were looking and what were they doing. This is valuable data for safety professionals to take the next step. There are other aspects as well, so ask us for a demo.
Pedestrian Detection
The other critical aspect to the forklift safety system is the pedestrian detection and object detection. This is critical especially for the worker. This is when the forklift safety system scans every 60ms in 1, 2, 3 or all 4 directions with an intelligent camera searching for people and objects within its defined path. This will give the driver an audio and visual warning giving the driver time to take corrective action.
