Who’s On There? Controlling Authorized and Unauthorized Access
We hear a lot about authorized and unauthorized access when it comes to industrial mobile vehicles in the facility. You know that’s it’s a critical part of keeping operators and non-operators safe. But how far can implementing an authorized and unauthorized access technology can it go? Let’s take a look at some of the ways it can be implemented.
What is Authorized and Unauthorized Access?
According to the OSHA Act of 1970 states that unauthorized personnel are prohibited from riding on a . This means don’t go near it. Don’t try to start it, don’t hang off of it for a joy ride, don’t get a lift on the forks, nothing. If you are not trained and certified to be on a forklift, stay away from the machine so harm does not come your way.
Authorized for Those Trained Only
It is critical to ensure access is limited to only those who have been trained on the forklift. We discuss each week in our newsletter (email cherise @ siera.ai to get added to our email list) forklift accidents that occur. It is sad to say that SIERA.AI reports just about each week with a new injury or death that has occurred on a forklift, including unauthorized access to a forklift.
What can be done? Technology is a key component to implementing forklift access control. Each solution in the market may do it a bit differently, so I can only speak with authority on SIERA.AI’s solution.
Forklift Access Control
When an operator is ready to begin the day, the forklift safety system by SIERA.AI only allows those with proper credentials to gain access to a lift truck. The forklift operator scans his badge or enters a PIN number which identifies the person entering the lift truck. Once that happens, the telemetry Dashboard is notified that (person’s name) is now on this particular asset.
If a person without the proper credentials tries to drive the lift truck, it will not start. Regardless of the attempts, the lift truck will not go. With some of the stories we’ve covered, there are many lives that would have been saved as a result.
Take a Picture!
Ever wonder who is attempting to start the forklift? You can never catch them because it is being done during after hours or a third shift. SIERA.AI can help you with that. Our system will take a picture of unauthorized users so you can identify ‘who’ is attempting to start the forklift and take action to ensure safety of anyone making a mistake and for those who need to care for the lift truck.
Track It!
All attempts for both authorized and unauthorized access will be tracked in our telemetry Dashboard. This is critical if you want to track who is on the forklifts, at what time did they sign in. It’s great to know this information so you can take action to protect all those with authorized and unauthorized access. You can even:
- Analyze by date
- Analyze by lift truck
- Analyze by operator or unauthorized operator
These are the most common uses in the telemetry Dashboard.
