AI-enabled Vision Systems will be in Prominent Technology in Warehouses 2 Years, According to Gartner
Would you believe that in just 2 years that half of all warehouse operations would be using or leveraging AI-enabled vision systems? Well, it is true. Gartner, Inc., the research and advisory company, stated this fact in June 2024. Are you on your way or has your company started to evaluate AI-enabled vision systems? If the answer is no, then you may be on the wrong side of the Gartner prediction. Which AI-enabled vision system should you evaluate and look at first? Which one can make the greatest impact on both the company as well as its customers? Let’s get into it.
What is AI-enabled Vision Systems
On a forklift safety system, the AI enabled vision system scans every 60 ms searching for pedestrians and objects that are within the pre-defined path of the lift truck. The AI-enabled vision system is a real-time, smart decision maker where it has learned the difference between a person and an object. Based on the intelligence and continued knowledge acquisition over time, the AI-enabled vision system continuously gets smarter and more precise in its identification for the forklift operator. Today, the SIERA.AI forklift safety system leads the way with its AI enabled vision systems working toward the goal of zero accidents for each customer.
The Forklift Operator
A tablet is installed on the forklift or lift truck along with 1, 2, 3 or 4 AI enabled cameras. The more cameras, the more information or data is collected. What the forklift operator ‘sees’ are the warnings that the AI camera finds that are potential hazards coming their way. This comes in the form of an audio warning, meaning a loud beeping sound, and a visual flashing warning. The visual warning that appears on the tablet is either 1. A symbol of a human or 2. A symbol which is a box that represents objects. When these warnings are given to the operator, the forklift operator now has time to react and keep everyone and everything safe.
Collected Data has Meaning
As the forklift travels, it is constantly collecting data. This data is automatically sent and stored in the secure, online telemetry Dashboard which can be accessed 24 x 7 by only authorized individuals. The data which includes: pass / fail for OSHA compliance from the digital checklist, impacts, near misses, encounters with pedestrians, encounters with objects and other key metrics. This data can now be analyzed and through our GPS system, can identify where the hot spots are located, analyzed and fixed to reduce the problems in the hot spot area. It can also help with maintenance to stay ahead of any issues in order to keep the lift trucks running and avoid costly downtime.
The forklift telemetry system is customer driven, meaning the data collected and graphically presented is driven by our customers. Instead of offering features that are not used, or rarely used, the features are driven from our customers and the system is updated to help them and other new customers continuously improve in safety.
