Can AI Bring Value to Forklift Safety?
That’s a great question that many workers have been wondering. With all of the hype with the technology, AI brings value to forklift safety. EY in the US commissioned a third party to conduct a survey on AI Anxiety in Business. The 1,000 person survey was conducted in October 2023 with office workers that had some familiarity with AI.
Results of the Survey on AI
Companies seem to be adopting AI quickly. But companies may not be as quick to keep employees abreast of the changes and allowed to understand the benefits. The press release on the study stated, “Given the uncertainty around AI in the workplace, employees and leaders alike are bracing for disruptions. A staggering 75% of employees are concerned AI will make certain jobs obsolete — and more alarmingly, about two-thirds (65%) say they are anxious about AI replacing their job.”
However, the study showed that it can be solved with training / upskilling and transparency. According to the press release, “However, while 80% say more training/upskilling would make them more comfortable using AI at work, nearly as many (73%) have concerns about their organization not offering sufficient training or upskilling. Even more worrisome is that 63% are anxious they won’t have access to AI learning opportunities.”

AI Brings Value to Forklift Safety
One aspect we know for sure is the value AI brings forklift safety. Here’s how. The SIERA.AI forklift safety system is based on AI and Machine Learning ML technology. Its use is to identify a person and identify an object. With it’s 8+ years of learning, it knows the difference. Why is this important?
- The human eye cannot move that fast. As a result, the intelligent camera technology moves every 60ms scanning and identifying a person or object within the pre-defined distance. If the forklift operator is driving and trying to work at the same time, isn’t the technology being the extra set of eyes that are constantly watching for everyone’s safety? Yes, it is. It is contributing to the forklift safety of the driver and those around it.
- The AI technology also can perform partial human detection. This means that if there is a person bending over behind boxes, a pallet or any other object, and all that is sticking out are two fingers, a fraction of a shoe or a hardhat, the AI technology has learned to identify partial humans. It will notify the forklift operator that there is a human behind those objects. This keeps the person behind the pallets or inventory safe.
When Purchasing…
It is always best to include the forklift operators so they know that this is not ‘big brother’ spying on them, instead it is helping to keep them and the workers safe. Who wants to have their friend injured? Not the forklift operator. This will proactively prevent it from happening.
