Scanning for Pedestrians and Objects with a Forklift Safety System
Forklift camera settings on a forklift safety system are more than letting the forklift operator ‘see’ around the forklift or turn on if the forklift is backing up. A forklift camera on a forklift safety system is scanning for objects and/or pedestrians that come within a defined distance of the forklift truck. Giving the authority to the manager to set up what the facility environment needs is what drives our forklift camera settings. Let’s take a closer look.
What are Forklift Camera Settings?
Forklift camera settings fulfill the needs of the facility environment by allowing management to select a variety of possibilities including camera location, camera preferences, alarm notification distances, and near miss detection. The forklift camera settings are located in the telemetry Dashboard and can be easily accessed with the proper credentials.
Forklift Camera Location
Where do you want to put the camera to search for pedestrian and/or objects? If using one camera, most companies will place it in the opposite direction of the forks. If you are using a second camera, you can choose the front, left or right side of the forklift. Making your choice is done right on the tablet which will transmit the information to the Dashboard where it will be displayed.
Forklift Camera Preferences
Camera preferences is unique to forklift safety systems offered in the market today. That’s because the SIERA.AI forklift safety system preferences lets you choose if the manager wants the forklift operator to be notified if there is a pedestrian or object or both! By selecting both, when a pedestrian is within a defined distance, the forklift safety system audio alert will sound along with a flashing visual alert with a symbol of a box to represent the object. If it is a pedestrian, the audio alert will sound along with the visual alert with a symbol of a person will flash.
The next forklift camera setting in preference is motion. Do you want the forklift camera to only scan for pedestrian and/or objects when it is in motion? (on/off) And do you want it on or off when the forklift is stationary, or not moving. Depending on your facility there are instances when this setting is necessary.
Alarm Notification Distances
SIERA.AI allows for greater distances to accommodate any facility. Within the telemetry Dashboard, you can set the distance in a single direction up to 33 feet. If you have a single camera, then you’ll be able to scan 33 feet in a single direction, two cameras 33 feet in two directions or a total of 66 feet. If you don’t want to scan to the maximum, then set your distance to what your facility demands: 2 feet, 10 feet, 14 feet etc. When an object and/or pedestrian comes within the defined distance, an audio and visual alarm will alert the forklift driver.
Near Miss Detection
Near miss detection is a valuable feature for a forklift safety system. Near misses are the precursor of a forklift accident. Within the forklift camera settings in the telemetry Dashboard, you can define the vision cone, meaning define the width, depth and height. This is a valuable feature if the area has narrow aisles or wide aisles to name a few.
