How to Overcome a Forklift Blindspot
A forklift blind spot system or forklift blindspot system is when the forklift driver’s view is obstructed at certain angles. These angles prevent the forklift driver from noticing if a person or another piece of equipment is too close to the forklift where if one or the other changes course of action, an accident can occur. One of the key aspects to technology-based forklift safety systems is to cover areas including blind spots so the forklift operator can be alerted when the forklift operators can’t see it for themselves. This type of forklift safety system can also be deemed a forklift blindspot system or even a proximity detection system.
Blind Spots
We’ve all experienced a blindspot. The most common occurrence of a blind spot is when we’re driving a car. Here are a couple of examples.
- Driving down a road or expressway and another car drives near the rear of the car and cannot be viewed by either the rearview mirror or the side mirror.
- Backing out of a parking lot space and you’ve checked all of the mirrors
In both of these cases blind spots occur and are high risks for an accident. The same holds true for a forklift. That’s why SIERA.AI’s machine learning AI solution is what companies need for a forklift blindspot system.
Poor Visibility Collision
As we’ve discussed so far, poor visibility is the cause of most collisions. The S3 Pedestrian Detection System is a forklift proximity system that scans up to 33 feet alerting the driver of pedestrians and obstructions with visual and audio alerts.
There are situations where 33 feet is a significant distance to monitor. In the telemetry Dashboard you have the control to set the distances to whatever you need for your facility. If you want the proximity alert system to warn the driver at 6 feet, or 10.5 feet or 13.25 feet, the distance is up to you. There are no preset settings it’s driven by your facility and when you want your drivers to be alerted.
Obstruction and Pedestrian Alerts
When an obstruction or a pedestrian enters the area that you’ve defined as a danger zone, meaning the forklift and a pedestrian or object are too close to one another, an alert will go off. Here’s what will happen both at the same time.
- If the obstruction is a pedestrian, then a symbol of a person will appear on the tablet. If the obstruction is identified as a box or any type of object, then the symbol of a box will appear on the tablet. This identification is critical for the forklift operator to know what it is that is within its danger path. The symbol will flash on and off in order to visually gain the attention of the forklift driver
- At the same time that either the person symbol or box symbol appears, the driver will also get an audio alert, or a beeping warning sound to attract the driver’s attention.
The forklift blindspot system or the S3 Pedestrian Detection System will give the fastest and best way to avoid an accident from occurring in the facility. The next step is for you to contact SIERA.AI and get an on-site trial of our S3 Pedestrian Detection System. There are many more features that we haven’t discussed, however a quick demo can quickly bring you up to speed.
