Are all Pedestrian Detection Forklifts Smart
A smart forklift is a newer concept for the material handling industry. The smart forklift most times includes artificial intelligence or AI, machine learning and vision technology to name a few. This type of intelligent technologies can actually help the safety industry by providing a watchful eye that the human eye can’t perform as well or as fast. With all of the warnings in the news about AI technology, it can actually do some good. Protect your employees, workers, equipment and facility from injury or damage. Let’s explore it further.
What is a Smart Forklift?
A smart forklift is when a material handling safety system or a forklift safety system is applied in order to prevent an accident that can cause injury, death or damage. It completes its task by using innovative technologies that can alert the operator when dangers come within a defined area. This area can be deemed the danger zone or danger area that if an object or a person comes within the defined distance, the risk of injury or damage increases. How does this work? Let’s take a closer look.
Pedestrian Proximity Detection
One of the most important aspects of a material handling safety system, or even a forklift safety system is the monitoring and alerting the operator of nearby danger. This works by using a intelligent camera that scans within a particular direction every 60ms for something within its path.
Once it determines there is something within its path, the AI then knows from its constant learning if it is a person or an object. Based on its findings, it immediately alerts the operator with a visual and audio warning. The visual warning is either a symbol of a person or a symbol of an object. This allows the operator greater information as what is nearby. At the same time the symbol is flashing, an audio alarm sounds. Both together are critical to getting the attention of the operator so action can be taken to slow down or stop.
Tracking
As the operators go about their day, all of the information is being collected and stored in a cloud-based telemetry Dashboard. The graphics based, easy to read format is purposefully made in order for managers to get the critical data they need in order to make a decision.
One important monitoring and tracking system is the Near Miss tracking report. This can be called near miss, or almost an accident. Near misses are basically the precursor to an accident. It has all of the makings of an accident, but it just hasn’t matured enough. Once it does, and it always does, an accident will occur. By understanding what is going on within that particular area, the safety professional can take action to prevent it from going further by taking corrective action.
Other areas to track include failed checklist inspections as well as low, medium and high impacts. These type of accurate tracking reports are due to the critical data captured during the operators shift. The collection of the data will determine patterns, whether it be the driver(s) or area within the facility.
A smart forklift is the benefit of innovative technologies used to prevent harm and damage.
