Is a Forklift Security System the Same Thing as a Forklift Safety System?
When a safety professional asks about a forklift security system, we need to investigate further to understand how they are defining the term ‘forklift security system’. Some may define forklift security system as a camera. Others, forklift access control. Of course, others just may not know what to call the forklift safety system. All they know is their lift trucks need security and protection. Let’s take a look at how the various ways security is reached on a forklift safety system.
Forklift Camera – Keeping a Look Out
Depending on what you want to accomplish, there are various types of cameras on the market. Most cameras are video taping or video recording so you have the view or evidence of what happened during an incident. If that’s all you are trying to accomplish, then fine. But if you are trying to avoid an incident, then you want the cameras to do more than just record.
The camera system that SIERA.AI implements has AI artificial intelligence built into it. This creates a smart forklift security system as it has the ability to identify when an obstruction is present. The obstruction can be a person or an object. This is important as the data the camera system is capturing, translates into a communication to the forklift operator so the driver can take action in order to avoid a collision.
Forklift Access Control Keeps Unauthorized People Off!
Another way to define a forklift security system is how people can stay off of the forklift. This is called forklift access control. Forklift access control prohibits the forklift from starting under the following conditions.
- An unauthorized person who has not been trained and does not a certificate. The forklift will not start.
- A forklift operator that has been trained on a particular class of forklift, but tries to access a different class of forklift in which they have not been trained nor is that person certified. For instance, a Class III forklift driver tries to access a Class I lift truck. The forklift access control system will not allow that individual access, and the lift truck will not start.
- When the forklift inspection (of any time) fails. If the forklift operator completes the digital forklift inspection and fails the inspection, the forklift will not start.
Telemetry Dashboard
One of the benefits of a forklift security system, or as we call it, a forklift safety system, all information: from pre-shift inspection, certificate management, forklift access control and identifying an object and/or pedestrian with the AI based camera(s), all roll up to the online or web-based telemetry Dashboard. This Dashboard will graphically track in real-time what is actually happening on the facility floor by tracking areas such as Pass / Fail inspections, low / medium / high impacts, unauthorized access attempts, pedestrian near miss, object near miss, and other critical information that you need to make a change on the facility floor. You can sort by timeframe, asset, worksite and more in order to determine where the issues are occurring so you can take action and reduce the amount of incidents.
