How to Avoid Forklift Related Injuries
Forklift related injuries continue to occur on a regular basis. We know that. According to the NSC, in 2011 there were 6,130 injuries reported. In 2020, there were 7,290 injuries reported. In between those years, the number of injuries from a forklift continued to go up and down. The lesson is that it has basically remained steady. So, were the traditional safety mechanisms used in the facility and on material handling equipment really working? It may have a part in keeping the number steady, but nothing was really helping to improve material handling safety in the warehouse, distribution center or manufacturing facility. Has anything changed?
What is Forklift Related Injuries?
Let’s first discuss what forklift related injuries are. Forklift related injuries can include both wounds or hurts done physically to the body caused by the forklift whether you are ‘on’ the forklift or ‘off’ or ‘near’ or ‘around’ the forklift. If it is a bruise, cut, or worse done to the human body, then these would be defined as forklift related injuries.
The Rise of the Forklift Safety System
It wasn’t too many years ago that forklift safety systems came to the industrial market. There were various forms of technology that started to hit the market such as guided tape and RFID. Even though these technologies are still around today, these technologies were good to get the industry ready for the more powerful and accurate tools to come in. Artificial intelligence, AI.
Logging that Experience
Along with the identification of the person, comes the recording of the potential incident. The telemetry Dashboard will, in real-time, record the incident so you, the manager will know how many pedestrians are nearby, when and where, or object nearby, when and where. This critical information will allow you to analyze patterns so you know where the hot spots are at, and potentially make adjustments to reduce the amount of encounters. This may or not be possible, but what the forklift safety system does is give you that accurate information so you can make an active, informed decision. This is taking the guess work out of the equation.
