How Many Forklift Safety Sensors Does Your Forklift Need?
A forklift directional sensor is part of the forklift safety system. The forklift safety system, or pedestrian detection system consists of a sensor or sensors, machine learning technology and a telemetry Dashboard. All of the elements of a forklift monitoring system are dependent upon the other in order to deliver the results of safety. What does the forklift directional sensor do? And how many do you actually need?
.
What is a Forklift Directional Sensor?
A forklift directional sensor is what begins the monitoring process. It is traditionally located at the top of the forklift for best viewing and scanning in a particular direction. The forklift directional sensor captures the information and delivers what it ‘sees’ directly to the machine learning technology for analysis. If the data captured has identified a person, then it communicates its findings to the touchscreen which visually delivers the message to the forklift operator along with an audio warning. The visual warning is a symbol of a human being. If the data captured has identified an object such as a box, customer product, racking system or another object, then it communicates the symbol of a box along with the audio warning to the forklift driver.
How Many Sensors Do I Need?
Mostly, this will be up to you based on your needs as well as the results from the trial. SIERA.AI recommends a week or two trial of the S3 PDS or S3 Pedestrian Detection System where you install the actual product and use it on a one to a few forklifts. This will give you the experience to know what the forklift directional sensor does as well as the type of information it collects.
Where are the Forklift Sensors?
Sensors are usually installed in one or two locations: front of the forklift truck or the back of the forklift truck. The front being where the forks are located, and the back being when the forklift driver needs to drive the forklift in reverse. The criteria have varied with our customers, so a complete evaluation will need to be done.
Data Collected
The forklift directional sensors do all of the heavy lifting of collecting data. As it constantly scans up to 33 feet in a single direction, it is capturing information within the defined path. If there is a box, or a pedestrian it is tracking the information. Do you need for it to always be 33 feet? No. You can set the distance to be whatever you want. You can change it as many times as you want, or set it once and forget about it.
Telemetry Dashboard
All of the information collected is sent to the SIERA.AI telemetry Dashboard. It tracks all of the information for you in an easy to read, graphics-based format so all of the data is visible. Track pertinent information such as:
- Total Number of Incidents
- Near Hits
- Low Impact
- Medium Impact
- High Impact
- Forklift Unauthorized Access
- Failed Inspections to name a few
This critical data will enable you to make decisions about your facility and make the necessary changes to reduce impacts, collisions or even potential hits.
