Do You Have a Forklift Benchmark for Near Misses and Impacts?
Do you know what your forklift benchmark is for your facility? It’s quite difficult to put a metric together when your data is hidden inside a stack of papers on a desk or even in binders on the shelf. You can’t get to that data unless someone hand keys in all of the answers into a spreadsheet. But then you even question…how good is that data? If the forklift driver does what’s commonly known as pencil whipping, then all that effort still won’t get you the forklift benchmark you’re searching for.
What is a Forklift Benchmark?
A forklift benchmark is the process of measuring key safety metrics and comparing them internally or against industry standards. In our industry, forklift benchmarking is a newer practice as tracking any metrics have been done on paper…if it was done at all. Because of the challenge of tracking metrics, companies started to take on telemetry systems.
Forklift telemetry is a way of tracking statistics on the forklift fleet. Some of the challenges many safety managers have with a telemetry system is the difficulty of getting to the information they need. It’s not because they can’t do it, it is the amount of time it takes to complete a single question. What can be done?
Telemetry Dashboard
This term, telemetry dashboard, is a way that SIERA.AI displays critical information that safety and plant managers want the information. Based on the feedback of safety managers and plant managers, the most critical information is displayed on the Dashboard so it is quickly accessed, analyzed and action can be taken to make change or maintain its current effectiveness.
What is Found on the Dashboard?
In order to develop forklift benchmarks, you need to start with accurate data. Once data is collected on the front end of the S2 digital inspection and the S3 pedestrian detection system, the intelligence of the system keeps track of the data and graphically displays it in a useful way for the plant and safety manager to apply.
Near Misses
Near Misses are a critical aspect to the report. It informs on how many incidences could have occurred if an impact was made. We love tracking near misses because it tracks the pattern of developing incidents. You have the control of changing that pattern and stopping an incident from occurring before it had a chance to fully develop into an impact. There are two types of near misses being tracked:
- Near Misses by Pedestrian – This is your ‘almost’ had an incident with a pedestrian. The Dashboard will keep a running total.
- Near Misses by Object The total number of ‘near hits’ with an object.
Impacts
Impacts are a vital part of controlling accidents, helping the forklift driver become a better operator and improving the awareness of pedestrians that need to be or work in the facility. There are three levels of impacts SIERA.AI’s telemetry Dashboard tracks:
- Low Impact
- Medium Impact
- High Impact
You can determine the settings for each of these areas based on your needs within the facility. In addition, you can control how often you get notifications. Get notified for all of these or just high or high and medium. It’s up to you.
Next Steps
All of this information is sitting right on the Dashboard. Why? Because this is the data that safety managers and plant managers have asked for. Now that you have, what will you do with it today? Contact us so you can test it out for yourself. Contact us at sales@siera.ai today.
