4 Positive Tractions with the Use of AI in Forklift Safety
AI in forklift safety is here and in operation today. These manufacturing, warehouse and distribution centers are already benefiting with the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. How? By utilizing these technologies within a forklift safety system allows the facility to avoid forklift accidents with pedestrians, and it also protects the products and the integrity of the facility. All three of these improvements reduce risks which results in various areas of cost savings. Let’s take a deeper look at how AI in forklift safety is gaining positive traction in the market.
What is AI in Forklift Safety?
AI in forklift safety means that the technology can take in and process large amounts of data that will recognize and identify patterns which if/when it does will make a decision and potentially act upon that decision. Over time, because of the continuous gathering of data, the decision and output, or results, gets better.
Positive Traction #1: Reduce Injuries / Fatalities
The camera(s) do their job by scanning every 60ms searching for an obstruction. This can be in the form of a person or an object. If it detects something within the defined path it is to scan, that information is interpreted and this is where the ‘thinking’ occurs. It will identify what it ‘sees’ as either a human or as an object. Based upon its accumulated knowledge, it will give a warning to the operator with audio and visual alerts as to what it is it ‘sees’. If it’s a human, it will be a symbol of a person, if it is an object, it will show a symbol of a box. This warning will happen faster than what the human can perform, especially if the operator is working and focused in a particular area. If the operator ignores.
Positive Traction #2: Reduce Damage within the Facility
Because of the AI identifying when there is an object within its working path, or that the lift truck is too close to the racking system, or turning the corner too tight, the operator will be alerted to these facts and avoid impact. The less impacts the forklift has, the less damage will be inflicted. When the operator is driving or operating the forks or attachment, the alert with a sound and a symbol will appear. Even if he doesn’t ‘see’ the flashing symbol, the operator will ‘hear’ the alert and know a change needs to be made.
Positive Traction #3: Reduce Downtime
As we all know, the more the lift truck operates, the more put aways get done, the more items get moved, and the more orders that get fulfilled. A forklift safety system that intelligently notifies the forklift operator of an impact, avoids collisions, whether it be equipment to equipment, equipment to facility or equipment to a worker. In addition, because of the digitized forklift inspection checklist being digital with data that is being collected, maintenance professionals can schedule the proper forklift maintenance that keeps the truck working at its best. The combination can result in reduced downtime or eliminate downtime altogether.
Positive Traction #4: Increase Productivity
Each one of the positive tractions listed above is maximizing the output, or productivity, of each forklift. This is what you’ve been working towards. Keeping productivity at its highest by knowing and controlling the damages to the facility, to a fellow worker, other equipment and the inventory itself. And when maintenance has a complete understanding of the health of the fleet, downtime is minimized and productivity is at its best.
